Protocols and documents

Use versioned documents for protocols, experiment notes, and reports.

guideReviewed 2026-06-26

EpistaBase documents are for the writing around your science: protocols, experiment notebook entries, and reports.

Protocols

Protocols live in the Protocols area. They are versioned, publishable documents.

When an Experiment links to a protocol, EpistaBase stores a snapshot of the exact published version. Later protocol edits do not rewrite the old experiment record.

Use protocols for:

  • assay steps
  • materials and reagents
  • acquisition settings
  • analysis methods
  • quality criteria

Experiment notes

Experiment notes are document-backed notebook entries attached to the Experiment. Use them for observations, decisions, deviations, and interpretation.

Reports

Reports can embed live or published figures. A report should tell the scientific story while preserving links to the figures, analyses, and experiments behind it.

Export

Documents can be exported for sharing outside EpistaBase. Treat exported files as snapshots. The traceable source of truth remains the document and its version history in EpistaBase.
